Abstract

В статье анализируются факторы, повлиявшие на восприятие британцами российской политики и культуры в конце XIX – начале ХХ века и формирование в их сознании противоречивого образа Российской империи, истинную сущность и потенциал которой не смогли распознать даже лучшие политические британские умы: Р. Гаскойн-Сесил, У.Ю. Гладстоун, А. Примроуз, А.  Бальфур, Г. Кэмпбелл-Баннериан, Г.Г. Асквит и др. При этом ведущие деятели британской культуры, получившие мировую известность, – Дж. Конрад, К. Мэнсфилд, В. Вульф и др. – сумели по достоинству оценить значение русской культуры, ставшей основой британского модернизма.
